A Greek Island Holiday Haven For Tourists and Pelicans
Greek Island holiday destinations offer many resorts which range from those providing all the facilities of mass tourism to remote places with little more than several village rooms. Islands also range in dimensions from ones that may be walked around in several hours to ones which have many major towns and hundreds of villages.
Lesbos (also spelt Lesvos) may be the third largest Greek island and has almost 200 miles of coastline to offer beach-loving holidaymakers. It's located in the north-eastern portion of the Aegean, just a few miles off of the Turkish coast and twelve hours by ferry trip from Athens. Fortunately the ferry trip is unnecessary because Lesbos has its own airport terminal.
No holiday resorts on Lesbos can be described as being "spoilt by mass tourism" however the most popular are with package holiday companies. Of these, Molyvos is among the most popular but even there, it is possible to enjoy a laid-back, away-from-it-all vacation.
The entire island is full of natural splendor and its spectacular, indented coastline is made up of numerous sand and pebble beaches interspaced with many secluded coves. The word, Lesbian arises from Lesbos. This is because it was the birthplace of Sappho, the traditional Greek poetess. Her poems contained expressions of homosexual love. Sappho is believed to have been born and lived in Eresos. This very small town is really a mile or so inland in the holiday resort of Scala Eressos. Although, relaxing and laid back, Scala Eressos has a certain vibrant quality and attracts a wide range of visitors. Included in this are many gay ladies who desire to enjoy women-only holidays or attend the annual Women's Festival.
As well as a good selection of bars and tavernas, Scala has a wonderful sandy beach, part of that is designated like a tolerated naturist area.
The streets from the resort are closed to traffic so you do not have to be worried about the road safety of your children. Where the village street ends, some cafes and tavernas have been built across the beach by extending them out to the sand. For those who have kids, you are able to sit in a single for any drink whilst the kids play in the sea, still safely in sight.
The beach and village are framed inside a beautiful setting of a green, fertile valley between arid mountains. Quite a lagoon at the rear of the beach may be the the place to find terrapins, frogs and seabirds. Children love el born area and therefore are often so fascinated with the terrapins that it's hard to persuade them to leave. In the country side around the resort tortoises can often be seen plodding their way along stony scrubland. However the best wildlife of is probably the resident pelicans. The two birds have become so tame they wake up to tricks around the beach too, snatching tubes of suntan lotion or even books from shocked sunbathers. Sometimes the pelicans will throw the items playfully into the air and then catch them. When a product as large as book drops into the bird's huge gullet, fear for the creature's safety momentarily replaces the humour inspired through the performance. But there is no reason to be concerned and the pelicans quickly realise the object has no nutritional value, fetch it support, and drop it on the sand. Not everyone sees the funny side of the pelicans' behaviour however, especially the individual who returns from the swim to find their beach towel occupied by one of them. But for the onlookers, this usually leads to an incredibly amusing shooing away scene.
For any naturist vacation in Lesbos, the resort of Scala Eressos is the best destination to stay at. Elsewhere around the island, you may be able to find a few other beaches where naturism is practiced however they will be remote and unofficial.
